Symposium 1: Hybrid nanomaterials for functional applications (June 1st, 2016)

Introduction

The combination of different types of materials with different functionalities can provide platforms suitable for novel and disruptive applications not achievable by other means. The functionalities of the components of a hybrid material may derive either from their chemical nature, from a particular physical property or from the nanometric size, morphology or organization. The architecture of the hybrid material and the characteristics of its established interactions will shape the overall functional properties and applicability. The symposium aims at gathering scientists from different fields to form a wide foresight of hybrid materials which are intrinsically inter- and multidisciplinary and with applications spread over all scientific fields.

Symposium 2: Clay-based Nanomaterials (June 1st, 2016)

Introduction:

This symposium intends to be a forum for the latest research on nanomaterials based on clay minerals and related solids such as metal-oxides and hydroxides (layered double hydroxides, LDH) nanoparticles. The aim is to focus on innovative advances related to nanomaterials based on layered natural or synthetic silicates, such as smectites, kaolinite and vermiculite,  and also on clays with other morphologies, such as sepiolite, palygorskite (attapulgite), halloysite and imogolite, as well as related materials.

The symposium will consider new aspects from preparation to specific characterization and especially on advanced applications of this type of nanomaterials.  Contributions dealing with new insights on synthesis approaches for the assembly of diverse nanoparticles to nanoclays, by layer-by-layer, sol-gel, encapsulation, and other procedures, the preparation of nanoarchitectures, nanocomposites, bionanohybrids and bionanocomposites are examples for being introduced.  Studies on aspects regarding properties of clay-based nanomaterials incorporating  functionality  as for instance optical, electrical and magnetic behavior,  biocide activity,  anti-static effect, corrosion inhibition, enhanced barrier effect, rheological behavior, controlled released of active ingredients, bio-compatibility,  solar radiation harvesting are also welcome.  Among other possible targets, the use of clay-based nanomaterials in applications regarding strategic sectors such as energy (production and storage), health and care products (drug delivery, gene therapy, sunscreen, cosmetics), environmental protection and remediation (specific adsorbents of heavy metals, pesticides and radionuclides, photocatalysts of organic pollutants, etc.), as well as industrial sectors such as polymer-clay nanocomposites food packaging, are also within the scope of this Symposium.

 

Symposium 3 : Nanosensors/ Nanobiosensors and Nanodevices (June 2nd, 2016)

Introduction:

Nanotechnology and nanosensors are broad, interdisciplinary areas that encompass (bio)chemistry, physics, biology, materials science, electrical engineering and more. Rapid developments in the studies of nanostructured materials for nanosensors have opened a new strategy in the practical application, and bringing the nanosensors to realized market. Potential application of nanosensors can expand to various fields including of (i) environmental monitoring, water pollutants; (ii) air pollutants, (iii) pathogens in clinical diagnostics applications. The present symposium will provide an overview on some of the fundamental principles behind nanotechnology and nanomaterials and their vital role in novel sensing properties and applications and will be an opportunity to researchers to show the most recent advances in nanostructured materials for nanosensors.
