Prof. Paula Pereira Marques
University of Aveiro, Portugal

Paula Marques (born 1969) is a Researcher at TEMA – Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation, Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Aveiro (UA), since November 2007. She has a first degree in Chemistry in 1993, a MSc in Chemistry and Physics Teaching (1997) and a PhD in Materials Science Engineering, with specialization in Biomaterials (2003) from the University of Aveiro, having worked as a post-doctoral fellow at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, Department of Chemistry and Materials and Ceramic Engineering, UA.

Paula’s major domain of specialization comprise the engineering and development of new nanostructured materials. Presently, her main research interests comprise the use of graphene-based materials for applications, such as: (i) mechanical and electrical stimulus responsive 3D graphene-based scaffolds for tissue engineering; (ii) functional graphene-based macrostructures for water remediation; (iii) electrospun graphene/polymer fibres for photocatalysis; (iv) graphene-based materials as mechanical reinforcement of polymer matrixes.

Regarding Paula’s pedagogical experience, she is the teacher in charge for the curricular unit Carbon Nanostructures of the Doctoral Program in Nanosciences & Nanotechnology, and teacher of the curricular unit Processes and Technologies at Nano-Scale of the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. Before and once graduated (1993) Paula was continuously involved in teaching activities as assistant lecturer teaching general chemistry laboratory classes in the Chemistry Department (UA.) In 2006, she joined the team of the coordinator in charge of the implementation of the Biomedical Sciences course at Secção Autónoma de Ciências da Saúde (SACS, UA) being responsible for the organization and teaching of biochemistry practical lessons (Da molécula ao Homem I e II) using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach. She is Visiting Professor at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden since January 2016. Concerning management activities at the academy, Paula is the Vice-Director of the Doctoral Program Nanoscience & Nanotechnology of the UA. She is Sub-Director of TEMA’s board of Directors, responsible for new areas of specialization. She was member of the scientific council (CC) and of the permanent commission of CC for the Human Resources of the UA and member of the Scientific Council an of the Scientific-Pedagogical Commission of Mechanical Engineering Department.
