Dr. Pablo Ares

Dr. Pablo Ares is a associate professor specializing in atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning probe techniques, and two-dimensional (2D) materials. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and a researcher at the Condensed Matter Physics Center (IFIMAC). After gaining industrial experience in the development of AFM instrumentation, he completed his Ph.D. at UAM, where he achieved international recognition for the first experimental isolation of antimonene, a novel 2D material. He later worked at the University of Manchester and the National Graphene Institute as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow, studying nanoscale electrical, mechanical and thermal properties of graphene-based materials and van der Waals systems.

Professor Ares has an outstanding research record, with more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, over 6,000 citations, and an h-index of 28. His work has appeared in leading journals including Nature, Science, Nature Communications, PNAS, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano. He has secured competitive funding from European and national programs, including a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, a Ramón y Cajal Fellowship, and several Spanish research projects. He has participated in more than 20 competitive research projects, acting as Principal Investigator in several of them. His interdisciplinary research continues to advance nanoscale characterization methods and the understanding of emerging low-dimensional materials for future technologies.
