Professor Nicolas Voelcker is the Strand Leader and Lloyd Sansom Chair in Biomaterials Engineering and Nanomedicine at the Future Industries Institute. He was trained in Germany (RWTH Aachen, PhD, 1999) and the US (The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, 1999-2001).
He took up a lectureship at Flinders University in 2001 and became a full Professor in 2008. Since 2012, he has been a full Professor at the University of South Australia.
A distinguished research professor, Prof Voelcker has published over 290 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the field of bio- and nanomaterials and has won more than AU$68 million in public and private research funding, and has graduated over 40 PhD students. His research focus is bio-nano science and technology with applications in diagnostics, drug delivery and tissue engineering.
Highly experienced in translating research results into real-world applications, Prof Voelcker's extensive list of externally-funded research projects includes an Australian Federal Police-funded project to develop forensic partner platform technologies for roadside and workplace testing based on nanostructured silicon chips.
Most recently, Prof Voelcker was successful in securing an ARC Discovery Project grant to develop new technology that enables the prompt, cost-efficient and accurate detection of harmful pathogens in our water and food supplies.
He is a Node Leader at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent BioNano Science and Technology, a Humboldt Fellow in Germany and a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
He is also a Professorial Fellow at the Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Germany.
